Serbian Air Watch

Main goal of the Serbian Air Watch project was to support local communities, that live in areas with high air pollution in advocating for clean air in Serbia.

Serbia is continuously facing alarming levels of air pollution, particularly in urban areas. Challenges regarding air quality in Serbia can be summarized in the heavy dependence of fossil fuels, especially coal. And air pollution in Serbia is causing many health problems and a very high number of premature deaths especially in areas with the highest pollution levels. In addition, there is insufficient relevant real-time air quality data in some of the major cities in Serbia that deal with constant air pollution.

Specific goals of this project were:

  • To raise awareness on the air pollution in Serbia through development of citizen air quality monitoring network;
  • To raise capacities of local CSOs and activists in the field of air quality policy;
  • To frame the issue of air quality within the 2020 election campaign.

Project activities were:

  • 50 air quality sensors and air protection masks purchased and installed in 5 different cities in Serbia and connected to the luftdaten.info platform;
  • 5 workshops on air quality policy, advocacy and air quality sensors assembling implemented in 5 different cities;
  • Campaign for clean air carried out through:
     - promoting results from citizen air quality monitoring;
     - formulating key messages and requests for the political parties and politicians that were taking part in parliamentary elections;
     - establishing cooperation with local mainstream and online media;

This project will be realised during the year 2020. Cities that will be included in this project are Šabac, Smederevo, Kragujevac, Kraljevo and Subotica.
