Climate change and protected areas

The project "Climate Change and Protected Areas" was designed in order to increase the resistance to climate change in protected areas in Serbia.

The Republic of Serbia, due to its geographical position, is very vulnerable to climate change. An additional increase in temperature will cause natural disasters in the near future (droughts, floods, landslides ...) which will certainly have a negative impact on biodiversity. Adaptation to climate change, mitigation of their effects, properly monitored and updating plans for managing protected areas are some of the measures for preserving biodiversity and improving the current state of protected areas.

The main activities on the project were:

- Research on existing plans for the maintenance and development of protected areas;

- Cooperation with a group of experts in order to identify the types of vulnerable to climate change issues into management plans;

- Presentation of assessments and guidelines to the managers of the protected areas and the interested public. Based on the project, an indication will be made of the proposed measures for mitigation and adaptation to climate change in protected areas.

The project was being implemented with the financial support of the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF).
